星迷宫 | star maze
Park Groot Vijversburg is a romantic public park with a growing art collection, located in the north of the Netherlands. The park is broadening its boundaries and is ambitious to become a national destination.The design gives a contemporary interpretation to two new park chambers which create a link between the historical park, a post-war recreational area and a nature reserve.

Central element in the design is the ‘Star Maze’, a remix of two historic park figures: the star shaped forest and the labyrinth.

This structure consists of five meter tall hedges that function like room dividers for the existing meadow and create several park spaces suitable for various use. On top of this, the structure creates connections to the surrounding landscape and arranges the accessibility to the various fields.

The second park chamber, which can be flooded regularly, contains several hills with perennials in a field of pollard willows. The hills can be reached through a grid structure of small dikes.

The third extension is filled with color installations by Tobias Rehberger, and is now dotted with a growing art collection. It was, as he said, like his grandmother's "fruit-filled adventure garden."
The design offers the visitor a great freedom of choice in the way he can move through the park. The visitor has to find his own way through the “Star Maze” to get to the different areas. The central space gives and overview in all directions, but at the same time doesn’t impose any directions. By doing so, the design goes beyond the ideals of public cultivationand public health which the nearby romantic park and the modernistic recreational landscape are based, and it gives the visitor maximum freedom to use the park however he wishes to.

Traditionally, a building's officialopening takes place between construction and occupancy, but LOLA believestiming landscape projects is much more difficult. Like, are you paving roadsand planting plants and then opening up? Or let everything grow and bloom afterthe first summer? Many plants are not fully formed, and the landscape variesfrom season to season. When is the best time to open?

The official reopening of The VijversburgPark coincides with the completion of the expansion of the park's memorialvilla designed by Marieke Kums and Junya Ishigami. The timing of the opening isnot bad for Vrijland, the part of the park designed for children.

Peter Veenstra believes that if the landscape keeps growing, it will always be done. He also found it interesting that every time he went there, there was a big difference. The hedges' star-shaped network grows taller every year, and once the hedges are fully grown in less than a decade, visitors can wander through the vast corridors and discover park space after park space -- each room with slightly different installations and artwork. Visitors can follow the corridor or take the shorter route through an opening in the hedge. The five-meter-high columns now show what these shortcuts and landscapes look like.
